English-Language PhD Program (in Environmental Law and Policy)


Study Year: The University’s academic year is divided into two terms. The first term runs from September to January, and the second from February to July. The PhD program starts in the first term. The program is generally completed within three years. It is not to exceed six years. (Please note that the PhD scholarship itself runs for three years, and it may exceptionally be extended up to a total of four years only.)


Credits: For the PhD degree, students are required to earn 8 credit points from taught courses, as shown in the table below. All 8 credit points are normally earned within the first two years of study.

Admission Requirements: Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens, under the age of 45, and must have attained a Master’s degree or have equivalent work experience. For the online application process and the required documentation and fees, see here.


PhD Thesis and Defence: A written thesis must be submitted. The writing of the thesis is supervised by a qualified PhD supervisor at Wuhan University. A thesis proposal must be submitted at least one year prior to the thesis defence. A committee will review the proposal to determine whether the topic is appropriate and feasible. The PhD thesis will be assessed by specially appointed assessors. Upon a positive assessment, the thesis must be defended before a doctoral colloquium at Wuhan University.



Publication Requirement: Two articles in refereed journals, with one of these articles in a journal indexed under SSCI (or a journal of equal quality).
