Ben Boer was born in The Hague, the Netherlands. His family migrated to Australia in the 1950’s. He began his academic career at La Trobe University, Victoria, in 1974; he moved to Macquarie University, New South Wales, in 1979. He was appointed Professor in Environmental Law at the University of Sydney in 1992. Between 2006 and 2008, he was the international Co-Director of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) Academy of Environmental Law and Visiting Professor based at the University of Ottawa. He was named an Emeritus Professor at the University of Sydney in 2008. In 2011, he was appointed National Distinguished Professor in the Research Institute of Environmental Law. He became a member of the Australian Academy of Law in 2016. He continues to be a member of the International Council of Environmental Law, based in Geneva. He was one of the founding members in 1984 of the Environmental Defenders Office in Sydney. He is a founder and a member of the Editorial Board of the Asia Pacific Journal of Environmental Law (Edward Elgar, UK), and a member of the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Environmental Law (Oxford University Press) and the Review of European Comparative and International Environmental Law (Wiley Publishers, UK). He is the co-editor, with Professor Qin Tianbao, of the Chinese Journal of Environmental Law (published by Brill in collaboration with the Research Institute of Environmental Law).
