RIEL Delegation Had a Successful Visit to Australia

On December 4-12, 2017, RIEL Director Prof. Qin Tianbao, deputy Director Prof. Ke Jian, deputy Director Dr. Hu Bin, Director assistant Associate Prof. Li Guangbing, visited Australia. During the visit, the delegation visited four cities in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, and communicated with people from local universities, courts, environmental protection NGO, law firms and enterprises, and achieved fruitful results.

In December 4th, accompanied by Prof. Ben Boer, the delegation visit to New South Wales, the land and environment court, held talks with chief justice Brain Preston Judith Preston and a number of judges, Lawyer Judith Preston introduced The Tree Disputes Helpdesk project (to provide legal advisory services to the trees the protection to the public), which was jointly launched by the land and environmental court and Macquarie University, and legal clinic education and the rule of law practice that Macquarie University and the court carry out jointly.

Subsequently, the delegation visited Environment Defender Office (EDO), the famous environmental protection NGO organization in New South Wales, and held talks with chief executive David Morris, external relations Director Emily Ryan, international project leader Beom Jin and so on. David Morris, etc., introduced the organization's organizational structure, operating mechanism, and environmental litigation.

In December 5th, the delegation visited the Law School of Macquarie University. RIEL have had a number of master's graduates study here and get a doctorate.

On December 6th -7th, the delegation met six environmental lawyers of Queensland Environmental Protection Bureau in the Bracey class, understand the legal practice of the relevant.

During the visit to Melbourne on December 8th-9th, the delegation met with Prof. Marilyn Pittard, vice president of Monash University law school, Associate Prof. Gerry Natzgaam, Associate Prof., law clinic instructor, doctor Kate Seear, Rowena doctor Cantley-Smith and so on. The two sides agreed to actively carry out activities of teachers and student visits. In order to help RIEL establish environmental law clinics and carry out educational practice, Monash University law school will send teachers to visit and provide guidance and advice. The two sides have preliminarily agreed to organize a joint rotation of the China Australia environmental law advanced seminar.

During the visit to Perth on December 10th-12th, the delegation visited the Peel-Harvey Catchment Council (the Peel-Harvey basin Council). During Perth, the delegation also met with the Western Australia water and Environment Management Bureau, Frances Hoskins, Lindsey Phelong-Beck, Rohan Mascarenhas, Western Australia Environment Defender Office (EDO) Declan Doherty lawyer, Western Australia mineral and energy commission policy adviser Bronwyn Bell, Director of the Glen McLeod Legal law firm Glen McLeod, vice chairman of Western Australia Association of environmental law Jess MS Hamdorf etc. Through the meeting, the two sides exchanged information and reached a preliminary cooperation intention.
