On December 5, 2016, six teachers and students from Law School of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia, visited RIEL and attended a seminar on the emergence, patterns and challenges of legal clinic education.
At the beginning of seminar, Dr. Wu Yu gave a brief introduction to the history and basic situation of the National Model Environmental Court Competition, in which our team won the runner-up in 2016. Some team members including Li Huaqi, Gao Han and Lan Ying shared their learning experiences and feelings of participating in the competition with the visiting delegation. Subsequently, Dr. Evan Hanman, the lecturer of QUT Law School, divided the present students into five groups for discussion on environmental issues in China, environmental conditions in Australia, and the role of environmental laws in China. Then, Evan briefly introduced the Law School of QUT and analyzed the clinic legal education, particularly the significance and mode of existence of environmental legal clinics.
Five students from the QUT gave an overview of several legal clinics combined with their own internship experiences and related materials. Finally, Dr. Evan Hamman and Dr. Wu Yu concluded that both legal clinic and model court were a kind of practice-oriented legal education, which was of great significance to students’ practical ability. After the seminar, the QUT delegation also visited the legal assistance center of WHU.
