Prof. Qin Tianbao was elected as member of the United Nations Convention Compliance Committee
Recently, a good news from the Cancun, Mexico that at the United Nations "Convention on Biological Diversity"(CBD) COP13, Professor Qin Tianbao, the director of RIEL, was elected as a member of the Compliance Committee for the Nagoya Protocol, “the Convention on Biological Diversity on Access to Genetic Resources and on the Fair and Equitable Use of Benefits”, for a term of four years (1 January 2017 to 31 December 2020). This is also the first time a Chinese scholar was elected to similar positions within the Convention system since the 1993 Convention on Biological Diversity coming into force.
Prof. Qin Tianbao long engaged in the study of biodiversity-related laws and policy issues, his study is in the domestic leading position in this field, having certain international influence as well. He has repeatedly submitted advisory reports and comments to the relevant ministries of China, providing theoretical support for the relevant domestic legislation and international negotiations, and achieved good social benefits. Qin Tianbao's academic level and consultation capacity has been recognized by the relevant state departments, and recommended by the Chinese government to participate in the election of members of the Compliance Committee.
At the Asia Pacific Regional Conference, the delegation introduced Prof. Qin Tianbao's expertise in the field and the advantages of negotiating practice, emphasizing its eligibility from both the will and the capacity. After the conference’s internal discussion, agreed to nominate Prof. Qin Tianbao. In the end, the Conference of the Parties adopted the nomination of Professor Qin Tianbao.
