Prof. Su Yiyuan visits Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law
The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) adopted the Minamata Convention aiming at the global control and reduction of mercury emissions in January 2013. Prof. Su Yiyuan gave an overview of the convention's structure based on its origin, and stated the “non-detectable” criterion. In addition, the convention requires “environmentally sound” trade measures, he believes that such standards are acceptable, but the contents and meanings still need to be more specific.
Prof. Su Yiyuan summarized the current status of mercury control in China with statistical charts and pointed out that China could continue mining for 15 years under the control of existing primary mercury mines. Meanwhile, he also made a comparative measurement of cross-strait different emission standards, indicating the differences in mercury control due to cross-strait different economic and industrial structures.
During the discussion, Prof. Li Qijia of RIEL and Prof. Li Zhiping from Sun Yat-sen University agreed that Prof. Su’s lecture was very lively and informative, which conveyed the latest information in this field and involved lots of new issues. Moreover, Prof. Su and the students exchanged opinions on balancing the conflicts between industrial waste disposal and consumer waste disposal as well as the results of convention exemptions.
