Teachers of RIEL attend SPC International Seminar on the Judicial Response to Climate Change

On June 13, 2016, the International Seminar on the Judicial Response to Climate Change hosted by Supreme People’s Court was successfully held in Beijing. Prof. Wang Shuyi, Alumni Prof. Lv Zhongmei, Prof. Hou Jiaru were invited, as well as some NPC deputies, directors of SPC Environmental Tribunal and International Cooperation Bureau, and experts invited by the EU Environment Protection Association. Jiang Bixin, the vice president of SPC, and Ms. Carmen Cano, the vice director of EU delegation to China, attended and delivered speeches.

Jiang Bixin noted that climate change is a world’s common problem, China has been an active participant in the global response to climate change. As an important part of the climate change governance system, environmental justice is playing an increasingly important role in response to climate change. SPC set up an environmental tribunal in 2014, guiding national courts at all levels to actively explore judicial response to climate change.

In the seminar, the EU Environmental Protection Association founder Mr. James Thornton, the Chief Judge Brian Preston of New South Wale, Australia, the Senior Lawyer Steve Wolfson, the deputy Director John Pendergrass of the US IEL, the Director Johnson Robinson of UK Environment Agency and Lawyer Patty • Goleman introduced the EU, Australian, US response to climate change and judicial situation of carbon emissions trading. Prof. Wang Shuyi, Prof. Lv Zhongmei, Judge Wang Xuguang, Prof. Zhou Ke, Prof. Wang Mingyuan, Prof. Hou Jiaru delivered keynote speeches on China’s carbon market building, climate change and the China’s environmental justice, judicial response to climate change and judicial activism, respectively.
