Dr. Elena Fasoli visits Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law

On May 6, 2016, the Celebration Series for the 35th Anniversary of RIEL and 30th Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law invited Dr. Elena Fasoli, the current researcher of Queen Mary University of London. She is also a member of compliance committee of “Aarhus Convention”, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). She gave a lecture entitled “Possibilities for ENGOs to Claim Damages in Relation to the Environment” for teachers and students of RIEL.

First, Dr. Elena made a brief introduction of the member states of “Aarhus Convention” and three pillars and soul of the convention, namely the access to environmental information, participation in decision making and access to justice that the public enjoys. Next, Dr. Elena introduced the member States coverage of the compliance committee of “Aarhus Convention”, UNECE, and detailed the responsibilities of operators, authorities as well as ENGOs in relation to “European Environmental Liability Directive”, in which she compared a number of cases of member states, and highlighted the ENGO’s work in material loss, reputation loss and pure ecological loss. Finally, Dr. Elena expressed her views and suggestions on claiming compensation for environmental damages.

In the interactive session, Prof. Qin Tianbao reviewed and commented on this lecture, and discussed the nature of ENGO’s claiming compensation for environmental damage with Dr. Elena and present teachers and students.
