Prof. Alex Gardner visited Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law
On April 14, 2016, the 29th Luojia Lecture Series on Environmental Law invited Prof. Alex Gardner from University of Western Australia. He gave a lecture entitled “Regulating Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Fossil Fuel Export Projects in Western Australia: A Case Study of the Browse Basin LNG Precinct Proposal”. This lecture was presided by Dr. Hu Bin, Assoc. Prof. Luo Ji and students of RIEL participated in this lecture.
First, Prof. Alex graphically and briefly described the geographical conditions and distribution of resources in western Australia, highlighting the impact of climate change on water resources in western Australia as well as strategic planning on public water supply of southwest government, and explained why western Australian government regulates the greenhouse gas emissions from international obligations and domestic needs. Next, Prof. Alex detailed three planning areas of Browse LNG (Liquified Natural gas) Project, gave his views on the environmental impacts of unconventional gas exploration to Australia and its exporters from the EIA perspective, and explained the necessary conditions for LNG Project’s approval. Finally, in conclusion, Prof. Alex talked about his views on LNG Project’s future development, and emphasized that each country should struggle for the target of climate change mitigation in Paris Agreement.
Dr. Hu Bin summarized that Prof. Alex Gardner’s informative lecture with multiple argument forms and new perspectives was very thought-provoking, he also encouraged students to take active part in lectures by foreign scholars. Finally, Dr. Hu Bin, on behalf of RIEL, invited Prof. Alex to attend the international academic conference in September this year. Prof. Alex Gardner said he was looking forward to come back to RIEL.
